Yes or No ?

 Iceland is holding a referendum today (29 August 2026) on whether to resume EU accession negotiations. The question is essentially: “Should Iceland resume/reopen accession negotiations with the European Union?” It is not a vote on full membership. A “Yes” would restart talks (previously suspended in 2013 after Iceland applied in 2009 following the financial crisis); any eventual accession treaty would require a second referendum, plus parliamentary and EU-side approvals.c9baa0

Will Iceland join the European Union?

 The Icelandic government has decided to hold elections this summer on the continuation of accession negotiations with the European Union. 

This decision caused great anger among the fishing giants, who are a kind of 'oligarchs' of Iceland. The political arm of the fishing industry (the Independence Party) has done everything possible to agitate for no elections, or at least delay them until party members and their families have finished their summer holidays in Florida and Tenerife. The far-right party (the Centre Party) has also been furious about this decision. The party, which has a great fondness for Trump and other far-right governments, is completely against any association with the European Union and would prefer an American takeover if that were available. - The main argument of the big fishing industry is that with EU membership, all fish that is already exported to foreign processing plants would continue to be exported to foreign processing plants, but with foreign fishing vessels instead of Icelandic fishing vessels.  - The extremist party's main fear is that the possibility of far-right domination in the country could be limited if the Icelandic public favors entry into the European Union.

Now everyone has to pay a mileage fee

A new regulation has come into force. As of January 1, 2026, all car owners, regardless of the energy source used, will have to pay a toll. The toll is €5 per 100 kilometer driven. It is likely that those who rent rental cars, taxis or minibuses will have to pay an additional fee of this amount. This will become clearer when the tourist year 2026 gets underway.

On the other hand, most oil companies have reduced fuel prices by 20% as oil tax is abolished.
